Gryphon CFL training camp news – June 7/16

CFL teams are now 10 days into their training camps. The first exhibition game is tomorrow night – Montreal Alouettes @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The game will be televised on TSN at 8 p.m. ET.

There will be lots for Guelph fans to follow with six Gryphon players in that game. Linebacker John Rush will suit up for the Bombers and OL Jake Piotrowski, DT Jeff Finley, WR Alex Charette, OL Matt Toppan and WR A’dre Fraser.

It is interesting when you view the Alouettes depth chart for the game to see that Jake Piotowski is the starter at Left Guard and Matt Toppan is the Als #2 Centre. With the recent retirement of Domenic Picard it looks like Toppan has a real shot to make the roster. Toppan is without a doubt a versatile athlete but he hasn’t played Centre since his Grade 9 year at Oakville Holy Trinity according to his mom.

Alex Charette will sit out of the game tomorrow. Presumably it is the same injury reported a week ago … Word out of Alouettes camp … “receiver Alex Charette sustained a hamstring injury” on May 30.

Thanks to Lou Toppan for these photos of Gryphons from the Alouettes scrimmage on Saturday …

Meanwhile in Winnipeg, after missing several days of practice early in camp, it sounds like John Rush is now an eager and healthy participant. talked to him the other day about some of the obstacles he has already overcome. Also, some feedback from Coach O’Shea …

“We saw in university that he was a guy who had a real nose for the football,” said O’Shea. “He just finds the football. Two years he struggled with an injury and it hampered him. But, boy, when you look at the film from last year he was all over the place and he made a ton of plays.”

There’s some good news and some bad news from earlier in camp …

  • The BC Lions released OL Cam Thorn on May 26, the eve of camp. I hope he gets a chance with another team.
  • No surprise here, Drew Edwards of has Ryan Bomben as the starter at RG in his “unofficial” Ticats depth chart.
  • Some good news re. John Rush

  • Tim Baines tells me Kyle Fraser-Audit is having a good camp in Ottawa but with solid Canadian depth on the O-Line he still faces an uphill battle to make the RedBlacks roster. He’ll have a chance to prove himself in exhibition games on June 13 and June 17. If he does return to Guelph, he will be a better player for the experience he is getting with the RedBlacks.
  • An injury brought to an end Daniel MacDonald‘s bid to crack the Argos roster. If there is any good news in that, it is that he was released outright and is a free agent if he wants to take another shot at the CFL. There were several other CFL teams interested in him in the off-season before the Argos put him on their Negotiation List. He is not too far away from being 100%, maybe another week.

A nice video piece with Gryphon QB James Roberts in the Argos camp as part if the CFL’s CIS QB Development program …
