The possibility of the Argos holding training camp at Guelph hasn’t been a well-kept secret. I first heard of this possibility several weeks ago.
Below is a story by Tony Saxon in yesterday’s Guelph Tribune – U of G mum on rumours Toronto Argos heading there for training camp
The University of Guelph is pleading the fifth on rumours that the Toronto Argonauts could be moving their training camp there this year.
New U of G Director of Athletics Scott McRoberts did confirm that representatives from the Canadian Football League team visited the school in February to check out its facilities, but that they were also looking at other campuses.
McRoberts would neither confirm nor deny that the school and team were in negotiations to host training camp at the end of May.
“They were here not too long ago to tour the facilities and get an update on what we’re doing here,” McRoberts said.
“We’d love to have them here,” McRoberts said, adding that the school is always looking to engage the outside community.
Anton Bennett, the Argo’s manager of communications, responded via email.
“At this point in time there has not been a decision made as to where we will host training camp. Although, we hope to know in the next few weeks,” Bennett said.
For the past two years the Argos have held their training camp at York University.
For several years in the early 1990s the Argos used the U of G for their training camp. They later spent several years at the University of Toronto’s Erindale Campus.
Since the Argonauts were last here the U of G has greatly improved its facilities, with major renovations to the football stadium, improved lighting, a greatly-enhanced weight room at the football stadium and artificial turf at all its main fields.
The U of G also hosted the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for several league games two seasons ago while their stadium new was being built.
Last year training camp opened May 27 with a three-day rookie camp, with full camp opening on May 31. Their CFL regular season opens on June 11.
My thoughts … I think it likely happens. And if not in 2016, then in future years. I really hope that Guelph can reach a multi-year agreement with the CFL team.
That would feed into one of my other visions … for the University of Guelph to host the annual CIS East-West Bowl & Combine in upcoming years.
