Gryphon Family suffers a loss

I received the sad news today that Anne Brown, the widow of former Gryphon Football Head Coach Dick Brown, and mother of Gryphon Hall-of-Famer Mark Brown, has passed away.  Mrs. Brown was in her 92nd year.

Her family will receive friends at the Haine Funeral Home & Chapel, 26 Ormond Street South in Thorold, on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. A service to celebrate Anne’s life will be held in the chapel on Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m..

Anne Brown was a revered figure for a generation of Gryphon football players. She played a real role in the lives of dozens upon dozens of players from the late 1960s thru the 1970s.

While my parents had known Anne for a couple decades I first met her at the 2014 Gala Dinner when her son Mark had his jersey honoured. She still looked well last September when she attended a dinner on Homecoming Weekend to honour her husband Dick Brown.

Almost everyone of Brown’s former players who spoke made reference to her. Most poignant perhaps was former Gryphon running back Dave Lane. Anne Brown will be dearly missed by hundreds of members of the Gryphon family.
