The Basics

Name:  Ruairi McGivern
Position:  Linebacker
Height:  6 feet 4 inches
Weight:  210 pounds
High School:  Lorne Park SS [Mississauga ON]
Summer Club:

Background

A sure tackler McGivern  has won consecutive ROPSSAA championships and OFSAA Bowl games with the Lorne Park Spartans. He was named Lorne Park’s Defensive MVP in 2014. In addition to their ROPSSAA & OFSAA games Lorne Park has also played some elite Ontario and American teams in the past few years as well. Tough competition helps to assure future success.

Commitment Breakdown

McGivern was one of four freshmen linebackers coming into training camp this August. Fifth-year linebackers Fraser Speakman & Jacob Harpell have graduated. Veteran starters Rush (5th) and Newton (4th + CFL possibilities) are expected back in 2015 but might both be in their final season. McGivern & his fellow freshmen will be competing for positions on the depth chart, the dress roster and special teams with the other seven returnees, and to position themselves for bigger roles in 2016.

My Take

I love the size, athleticism and toughness of linebacker Ruairi McGivern. At 6’4″ & 210 pounds he runs and plays very well in space. You know when a player comes from a Tier 1 school that is always competitive and has won recent championships he is going to have been well coached. That applies here.  McGivern is a sure tackler and looks like he would make a great WILL linebacker, possibly even a SAM. Lots of options for this player in my opinion. Depending how he develops physically, he could even make a Cam Walker-type transition to the DE position.

Odds & Ends

♦  Lorne Park Spartans have won 22 JV Football Championships, 19 Varsity Football Championships, and 3 Provincial Bowl Games.
♦  I know there have been more than a couple Gryphon football players who have come to Guelph from Lorne Park. Off the top of my head … OL Chris Portwood is a Spartan Alum.
