Receiver recruit Sam Lewis

The Basics

Name:  Sam Lewis
Position:  Receiver
Height:  5 feet 10 inches
Weight:  170 pounds
High School:  Nelson HS [Burlington ON]
Summer Club:  Burlington Stampeders

Background

Another multi-purpose player, Nelson’s Sam Lewis is primarily a slot receiver but, when his Stamps team needed him to, he lined up at tailback for several games. And he played that position very well including a 205-yard rushing performance against the Huronia Stallions. Lewis was named to the 2014 OFC All Star team as a receiver. He scored at least a dozen TDs last summer with the Stampeders and was named the team’s Offensive MVP. He showed the same type of versatility with the Lords, playing multiple positions.

Commitment Breakdown

Sam Lewis is one of 7 receivers in the 2015 recruiting class. The receiving corps has lost one starter to the CFL but returns 3 others. With Alex Charette making the Montreal Alouettes there will be a vacant position for a slot receiver. In 2015 the lineup will have one 5th year player plus as many as 4 or 5 draft eligible or possibly graduating players in 2015.

My Take

Lots of things to like about Lewis based on his film. He high-points the ball. Catches long and short passes. Picks up lots of YAC yards. Accelerates very quickly. Like most freshmen Lewis should benefit from a year on the scout team and the opportunity to add some size and strength while learning the playbook.

Odds & Ends

♦  One of two Nelson Lords in the 2015 recruiting class. The other is LB recruit Aidan English.
♦  Lewis’ biggest accomplishment of 2014 may have come as a sprinter when he earned an OFSAA Gold Medal as part of Nelson’s 4×100 championship relay team.
♦  Before Christmas CanadaFootballChat.com had reported that Lewis had narrowed his recruiting choices to Western, McMaster, Waterloo and Guelph. He announced his commitment to Guelph in January.
