Receiver/Returner recruit Mike Ciavarella

The Basics

Name:  Mike Ciavarella
Position: Receiver
Height:  5 foot 10 inches
Weight:  165 pounds
High School:  Sherwood SS [Stoney Creek, ON]
Summer Club:  Hamilton Hurricanes [OFC]

Background

An all-purpose player for the Sherwood Saints where he won multiple team MVP honours. The Saints made it a point to get the ball into Ciavarella’s hands 15 to 20 times a game on both rushing and passing plays. Ciavarella won an OFC Championship with the Hamilton Hurricanes in 2014. He scored on running and receiving plays but made his biggest impact on special teams where he added TDs both as a kick returner and as a punt returner. He was the Canes’ Special Teams MVP in 2014. Ciavarella was named to the 2015 OFC All Star team as a wide receiver.

Commitment Breakdown

One of 7 receivers in the 2015 recruiting class. The receiving corps has lost one starter to the CFL but returns 3 others. With Alex Charette making the Montreal Alouettes there will be a vacant position for a slotback receiver. In 2015 the lineup will have one 5th year player plus as many as 4 or 5 draft eligible or possibly graduating players in 2015.

My Take

Nice to see Chiavarella play against the Bisons. He didn’t look at all out of place as a punt returner. He should benefit from a year on the scout team, hopefully adding some size and strength while learning the playbook. Should have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot in 2016.

Odds & Ends

♦  Made the travel roster for the preseason game against the Manitoba Bisons. Saw action as a punt returner [4 returns for 19 yards] and a receiver.
♦  I can’t recall the last recruit that the Gryphons had from Sherwood but Ciavarella didn’t arrive as a stranger. Two of his Canes teammates – Pascal D’Ambrosio & Daniel Fasciano – were also members of this recruiting class.

Film Watch

A found a few of his 2014 Canes highlights here. Also, one of his punt returns vs Manitoba.
