Well that went pretty much as I expected. As I wrote in my preview

Guelph will win easily. At this point in time the disparity in talent between the two teams is huge … I look for the Guelph offense to get in a groove early and keep their foot on the gas throughout the game … The Gryphon D is quite capable of smothering the Warriors. A shutout is a distinct possibility.

I was actually impressed with the Warriors. That team had some fight in them and didn’t quit in the game. I really liked the play of their young QB Lucas McConnell. He wasn’t intimidated and I think he gives them a chance to compete in several OUA games this fall. I know the score was ugly but Coach Bertoia’s Warriors did seem different than other Warrior teams. They did a better job running the ball than UW teams of recent years.

With Alex Charette departed, people have been wondering who, besides A’dre Fraser [114 yards & 2 TDs], Gryphon QBs could count on to catch the ball. Jacob Scarfone [six catches for 201 yards & 2TDs] looked like he was ready to step up and be a “go to” guy. Johnny Augustine had the type of game he needed to – 149 rushing yards on 10 carries, 20 yards on 2 receptions. QB James Roberts stat line was 15 of 22 for 325 yards with 3 TDs and 1 INT. Ex-Laval QB Alex Skinner made his Gryphon debut going 3 of 6 for 112 yards with 1 TD.  Punt returner Ryan Nieuwesteeg showed he wasn’t a one-season wonder with 164 punt return yards and a TD on 10 attempts. Linebackers Luke Korol [5.5], Derek Drouillard [5] and Andrew Graham [5] led the team in tackles.

Guelph Mercury: Gryphons wallop Warriors to open campaign – Rob Massey wraps up the scoring fairly succinctly …

Jacob Scarfone caught touchdown passes of 53 yards from James Roberts in the first half and 67 yards from Alex Skinner in the second half. Johnny Augustine ran in for touchdowns from eight, five and 43 yards while A’Dre Fraser caught touchdown passes of 38 and 63 yards from Roberts. Ryan Nieuwesteeg ran a punt back 79 yards for a touchdown — he had another punt return touchdown called back by penalty. Roberts scored a touchdown on a one-yard run and Daniel Palmer-Salmon scored a TD on a three-yard run. The Gryphon defence scored two safeties, Waterloo yielded a rouge and Gabe Ferraro kicked a 38-yard field goal and 10 converts.

The Mercury article mentions that six rookies played for the Gryphons. I figure those six are LB Job Reinhart, DB Elijah Walker, REC Kade Belyk, OL/DL Andrew Chichka, OL Jaylan Guthrie and redshirt LB John Birnie. If any caught my attention they were Reinhart & Walker. Reinhart is already making plays on special teams, while Walker showed that he is super talented. Both stood out in last week’s preseason game against the Manitoba Bisons as well.
