My Take: Game day is finally here!! It may not be a regular season game but I’m more excited for this national interlock match-up than our season opener on August 30 at U of Waterloo. I think Manitoba is a team that will be a real test for the Gryphons. And a measuring stick. They have a reputation throughout CanadaWest as always being a tough team to play, in large part because they are very physical at the line of scrimmage.
This Manitoba team was last season’s CanWest Champs and return more talent than I originally thought. We’ve heard about some key losses including QB Jordan Yantz and now-CFL receiver Nic Demski, but the Bisons return a couple of top 2016 CFL prospects on the defensive side of the ball in LB DJ Lalama and DT David Onyemata. QB Theo Deezer played very well in place of Yantz for 2-1/2 games last season and he’ll have a strong and experienced O-Line in front of him.
Ex-Laval QB Alex Skinner will not play for the Gryphons. Two incoming high school QB recruits – Theo Landers and David Luke – will see action behind starter James Roberts. How these young men play will be worth taking note of. The end result of the game could depend a lot on whether or not the 2nd & 3rd string offensive units can sustain drives.
I don’t have too many worries about how our defense will play. I believe we are very solid thru our 2-deep roster on defense. The starting Gryphon defense will include 12 starters, in spite of the losses of DE Cam Walker (CFL) and CB Mikey Carney (injury). In my opinion former starters Jordan Thompson and Orion Edwards will step up to fill those openings with barely a hiccup.

It is the first one played in Winnipeg [both previous match-ups were at Guelph’s Alumni Stadium.] and the first-ever CIS pre-season game to be played at Investor’s Group Field. This is the first game of a home-&-home series with the Bisons coming to Guelph in August 2016
