LB recruit Dean Yaromich

The Basics

Name:  Dean Yaromich
Position:  Linebacker
Height:  6 feet 2 inches
Weight:  220 pounds
High School: Blessed Trinity CSS [Grimsby ON]
Summer Club:  Niagara Spears

Background

In 2012 Dean Yaromich was named the Niagara Spears’ Defensive MVP in spite being the youngest player on the team. He finished that season with the third highest total of defensive points in the OVFL. Yaromich was an OVFL All Star at linebacker. He was a key player on a very good Spears team that reached the OVFL championship game in 2013. Yaromich was a two-way player for his high school team the BT Thunder. He was a big, powerful running back in addition to playing LB. Yaromich was a Niagara Region AAA/AAAA All Star in 2013 and 2014.

Commitment Breakdown

Dean Yaromich will be one four freshmen linebackers coming into training camp next month. Fifth-year linebackers Fraser Speakman & Jacob Harpell have graduated. Veteran starters Rush (5th), Newton (4th + CFL possibilities) & Myers (4th) are expected back in 2015 but might all be in their final season. Yaromich & his fellow freshmen will be competing for positions on the depth chart, the dress roster and special teams with the other seven returnees, and to position themselves for bigger roles in 2016.

My Take

I recall in 2012 talking with some CIS recruiters at Spears’ games who could hardly believe that Yaromich, already 6’2″ 210 pounds and playing like a veteran, was as young as he was. It was clear even back then that Yaromich had CIS potential. In my opinion his size and experience will allow him to compete for early playing time.

Odds & Ends

♦  Back in 2011 it was former Gryphon Mark Antonelli who tipped me off to a stud player he had playing for him at Blessed Trinity in Grimsby – a guy with definite CIS ability. Back then, Antonelli was the defensive coordinator of BT’s Junior Varsity team, a squad that won the Niagara championship that year.
♦  If I’m not mistaken Yaromich is the first recruit from Grimsby’s Blessed Trinity Thunder since 2008 when my son came to Guelph.

Wow what a game at Western on Monday,September 4,2017. I was able to go to the game and meet your father and his friend. We went to the Oar House to wait out the weather and the start of what turned out to be a great football game. I would like to get your father and his friends names. My name is Mike Christie and I had a great time with your father and his friend and would like to stay in touch with some very nice people. Good Luck this year and I hope to see the Gryphons and Mustangs play again this year.

    Sincerely
    Michael Christie
