DE Byron Mackinnon was a top BC defender at Mount Douglas High School. The Mount Doug Rams have been a top BC program for years. Mount Douglas won the AAA Provincial Championship in 2011, 2012, 2013 and reached the final again in 2014. Mackinnon was a force at defensive end for the Rams recording 12 sacks, 15 knockdowns, 33 tackles and an interception.
One of 7 DL recruits this year after only taking one last year. The Gryphons were short-handed at some points last season after the surprising loss of 5 DLs in the off-season, including Jeff Finley to the CFL. Djordje Gavrilovic has graduated and Cam Walker is now with the CFL Argos. The Gryphons have been pro-active bringing in some top D-Line talent in advance of possibly losing five more DLs after the 2015 season.
More than anything else, what jumped out at me in his 2014 highlights was the incredible number of plays that Mackinnon made at or behind the line of scrimmage. The 6’2″ 220-pound D-end blocked more passes than I can recall seeing in any highlight tape before. His ability to pressure the quarterback, sack the QB and make tackles-for-loss is amazing. I think Mackinnon has a chance to play early. His name did come up when coaches were asked at a FoGF alumni reception which recruits might see action in 2015.
Odds & Ends
♦ To my knowledge Mackinnon will be the fourth Mount Douglas Ram to join the Gryphons. Current players on the roster with Mt Doug connections – Mason Swift & Blake McNeely.
♦ Mackinnon came close to being another brother duo with the Gryphons. His older brother Ashton was a CFC Top 100 ranked QB in the 2014 recruiting cycle who narrowed his choices to Guelph and Manitoba before picking the Bisons.
