QB recruit David Luke

The Basics

Name:  David Luke
Position:  Quarterback
Height:  6 feet 3 inches
Weight:  193 pounds
High School:  Citadel HS [Halifax NS]
Summer Club:  NSSFL

Background

Luke shared QB duties for the 2014 NSSAFFL Div 1 Champion Phoenix. After a one year hiatus the Citadel’s victory was its sixth in seven years. Luke was a member of the 2012 Provincial Championship squad as well. Luke played in the Nova Scotia Minor Football Assoc prior to joining the Phoenix and has played in Football Nova Scotia’s Spring Football League for elite players during his high school years.

Commitment Breakdown

David Luke is one of two high school QB recruits joining the Gryphons at #GryphonCamp15. With James Roberts the lone returning QB on the roster Guelph needed to add at least 3 QBs. Even with the addition of Laval transfer Alex Skinner there will be lots of reps available in training camp for young QBs. While Roberts has four years of eligibility and Skinner two, the Gryphons will be just a sprained thumb or twisted ankle away from having to prep a freshman QB for a regular season game. I expect at least one freshman QB to play against Manitoba.

My Take

Luke was a much needed addition for the Gryphons just from a numbers point of view. College football programs generally need 4-6 QBs and Guelph only has four. One injury and it becomes hard to do everything that you want to do in training camp. Luke’s arm will get lots of reps in passing drills if nothing else. At 6’3″ 193 Luke has good size and could add some good weight. I like that he has played in a top program winning a provincial championship

Odds & Ends

♦  An excellent student, Luke was accepted into the UofG’s School of Engineering before he contacted coaches about joining the Gryphon football program.
♦  Luke comes from the same Halifax high school football program that sent A’dre Fraser to Guelph
