Name: Pascal D’Ambrosio
Position: Offensive lineman
Height: 6 foot 3 inches
Weight: 300 pounds
High School: Cardinal Newman CSS [Stoney Creek ON]
Summer Club: Hamilton Hurricanes [OFC]
While D’Ambrosio is a relative newcomer to football he had the natural strength, toughness and size to be an immediate success and he has won multiple championships in his short career. That includes back-to-back Hamilton Catholic City championships with the Newman Cardinals for whom he played on both sides of the ball. In 2014, his first season of summer football, D’Ambrosio won an OFC Varsity title with the Hamilton Hurricanes and was named to the OFC All Star team. I asked him how his 2015 season went. He responded, “Personally I had the best season of my life”. Hard for me to imagine he isn’t named to the OFC All Star team again.
D’Ambrosio is one of five OL recruits in this year’s recruiting class. While Guelph will return all of the starters from 2014, there will be major turnover in the next two years with as many as 8 current OLs graduating. Three of five starters are members of the 2011 recruiting class [i.e. heading into their 5th season]. The other two starters will be heading into their 4th year. More than any other position, high school offensive linemen need as much time as possible to develop, before they are thrown into the fray of CIS play.
I really like this pick-up beyond just what D’Ambrosio brings on the field. He is the first recruit from Cardinal Newman to commit to Guelph in at least a decade. In the past half dozen years Cardinals Coach Anthony Macaluso has built a strong program at Newman that competes for City Championships annually. On the field D’Ambrosio is becoming a dominating player. He was named a Hurricanes team captain. While D’Ambrosio looks the part of a guard he played left tackle for the Canes. I think we could see him providing the type of versatility that players like Cam Wilhelm and Matt Richardson have.
Odds & Ends
♦ A serious student, D’Ambrosio will study Physics at the University of Guelph.
♦ D’Ambrosio is one of two CN Cardinal teammates headed to Guelph this month. Defensive end Daniel Fascione is the other.
♦ This OFC season D’Ambrosio allowed 1 coverage sack and other than that didn’t miss a block.
