Name: Spencer Swan
Position: Offensive lineman
Height: 6 foot 5 inches
Weight: 300 pounds
High School: Guelph CVI [Guelph ON]
Summer Club: Guelph Jr. Gryphons [OFC]
Swan didn’t play football until he was in Grade 10 but has twice been selected to the Division 10 All Star team – 2013 & 2014. Named D10 Lineman of the Year for 2014. Played left tackle for a GCVI team that led D-10 in scoring in 2013, averaging 35 points per game. Swan is now in his third season of playing summer ball with the Guelph Jr. Gryphons who went 7-1 and reached an OFC C0nference final this year. Attended Guelph’s Elite Big Man Camp back in March.
Originally committed to Guelph in 2014, Swan told the Guelph Mercury … “I needed to upgrade some of my marks, some things academically, and I don’t know if I was ready physically to come here, so I took another year,” he said. “Now I feel a lot better about making that next step.”. The extra year has also allowed Swan to add 30 pounds to his frame.
Swan is one of five OL recruits in this year’s recruiting class. While Guelph will return all of the starters from 2014, there will be major turnover in the next two years with as many as 8 current OLs will graduating. Three of five starters are members of the 2011 recruiting class [i.e. heading into their 5th season]. The other two starters will be heading into their 4th year. More than any other position, high school offensive linemen need as much time as possible to develop, before they are thrown into the fray of CIS play.
The way I understand it, assistant OL Coach Zack Pollari helped coach at GCVI in 2013. He worked with Swan and is a big believer in Swan’s potential. I have not seen Swan play in person nor found any film on him. The fact that Pollari has worked closely with Swan gives me some confidence in Swan’s potential to compete for playing time in the not too distant future. Landing the top lineman prospect to come out of Guelph in the past few years is very important as the Gryphons look to keep all the top prospects home. I believe Swan projects as a RT but could also play OG.
