Name: Lukas Brennan
Position: Defensive End
Height: 6 foot 3 inches
Weight: 240 pounds
High School: Sir Winston Churchill SS [St Catharines, ON]
Summer Club: Niagara Spears [OVFL]
Won a Football Canada Cup Gold Medal with Team Ontario in 2014. Prior to that Brennan was Defensive MVP for the Niagara Spears in 2013 and the Spears Lineman of the Year in 2012. At the high school level Brennan was named to Niagara’s AAA All Star team in 2014. Attended Guelph’s Elite Big Man Camp back in March where he received instruction from Jeff Finley [Alouettes], Cam Walker [Argos], Jordan Thompson [5th Year] and DL Coach Brian Cluff.
One of 7 DL recruits this year after only taking one last year. The Gryphons were short-handed at some points last season after the surprising loss of 5 DLs in the off-season, including Jeff Finley to the CFL. Djordje Gavrilovic has graduated and Cam Walker is now with the CFL Argos. The Gryphons have been pro-active bringing in some top D-Line talent in advance of possibly losing five more DLs after the 2015 season.
I like that Brennan is physical, aggressive, mobile and plays with a high motor. He has played a high level of competition competing in Niagara’s premier HS league, the OVFL and at Football Canada Cup. He brings good size to the defensive end position but I could also see Brennan making the same move to the inside that worked out so well for Jeff Finley. Brennan will be an important part of the DL rotation within a year or two.
Odds & Ends
♦ Elected Valedictorian at Sir Winston Churchill SS by his classmates.
♦ Brennan’s Team Ontario teammates included DB recruits Elijah Walker and Austin Gonsalves. They faced off against Team Saskatchewan and future Gryphon teammates Kade Belyk & Jamal Hooker in the Gold Medal game.
♦ Brennan has some notable similarities to Jeff Finley who also hailed from St Catharines. Both attended Sir Winston Churchill, played for the Spears, played DE in high school, and came to Guelph with similar measurables – 6’3″ 240 lbs.
