Name: Noel Amaya
Height: 6 foot 1 inches
Weight: 200 pounds
High School: Our Lady of Lourdes CHS [Guelph, ON]
Summer Club: Guelph Jr. Gryphons [OFC]
Amaya was winner of the 2014 FitzGibbon Award [D10 MVP], the Offensive MVP Award and a D10 All Star as a receiver. Amaya played receiver, defensive back, punter and kicker for the Lourdes Crusaders team that won the D10 championship, beat the Bluewater champs and pulled off a semi-final upset to reach the CWOSSAA Championship game in 2014. Lourdes lost to 5-time CWOSSAA shamps Brantford Assumption. Amaya has also played some quarterback in his career with Lourdes and for the Guelph Jr. Gryphons. Just like he did in high school Amaya has had several multi-TD games this summer for the 7-1 Varsity Jr. Gryphons.
One of 7 receivers in the 2015 recruiting class. The receiving corps has lost one starter to the CFL but returns 3 others. With Alex Charette making the Montreal Alouettes there will be a vacant position for a slotback receiver. In 2015 the lineup will have one 5th year player plus as many as 4 or 5 draft eligible or possibly graduating players in 2015.
The fact that Amaya combines speed and elite athleticism with a 6’1″ 200-pound frame makes him special in my opinion. I think it gives OC Galloway options to utilize him in multiple positions. I could see him playing almost any receiver position or possibly in a hybrid position like H-back. I continue to be amazed that the Gryphons have landed almost every top local prospect going back at least as far as Justin Dunk in 2005.
Odds & Ends
♦ Amaya started his career at Lourdes with a D10 Championship in his Grade 9 year and he finished his career with a D10 Championship four years later. Amaya was Rookie-of-the-Year in 2010.
♦ Need any more proof of Amaya’s versatility? He has had to be both kicker and punter for Lourdes and in several games for the Jr. Gryphons this summer.
