DT recruit Erik Bierman

The Basics

Name:  Erik Bierman
Position:  OL
Height:  6 foot 5 inches
Weight:  275 pounds
High School: Jacob Hespeler HS [Cambridge, ON]
Summer Club:  Cambridge Lions {OVFL]

A two-way lineman for Jacob Hespeler, Bierman helped the Hawks to WCSSAA championships in 2013 & 2014. They were finalists in 2012, Bierman’s Grade 11 year. Bierman was named a 1st-team WCSSAA All Star in 2014. Bierman played in two GTA vs GHR All Star games – as a Future Star in 2013 and a Current Star in 2014. Bierman has played three seasons with the Cambridge Lions, including this year.

Commitment Breakdown

Erik Bierman is one of seven defensive linemen in the 2015 recruiting class.

Three of those recruits are not going to play inside. Three more could move from DE to DT or vice versa. Bierman is the only pure DT in my opinion. I expect the D-Line depth chart to have nine returning players, five of whom will be in their 4th or 5th year. I don’t know about playing time as a freshman but in 2016 Bierman should be in a position to compete for lots of snaps.

My Take

Bierman immediately passes the eye test. Big frame, good weight, moves well. Watch him in sweats at Mac’s Up Front Lineman Camp in 2013 to see for yourself. He is definitely a DT in the CIS, though physically he reminds me a lot of Cam Thorn who moved to the O-Line in his 5th year and now the CFL. His height is an asset you don’t always get with an inside player. I see DL Coach Brian Cluff being able to do a lot with him. He does need to play with his pads lower. With CFC Top 100 DT Jessy Kocins no longer heading to Guelph Bierman’s development becomes even more important for the future.

Odds & Ends

♦  Lots of connections – Bierman’s teammates at Jacob Hespeler and with the Cambridge Lions in 2013 & 2014 included current Gryphons James Roberts and Eric Starczala. Drew Walden and Andrew Pickett played with Bierman on the 2013 Lions and the GHR All Star team. Fellow recruit Josh Cassista has played with Bierman on the Lions in 2014 & 2015.

  1. Phil says:

Guelph got a good one here. The obvious parts can be seen but the things you can’t see on film clips are equally important; his intelligence and ability to pick up schemes and learn quickly will, I think, allow him to transition to the next level with success. I wish my friend the very best in his career at Guelph and I look forward to watching him live on the field with the Gryphons soon.
