♦ All of the Gryphon veterans in the league – Maver, Bomben, Thorn, Piotrowski, Finley and Reinhart – retained their spots. 2015 draft picks Alex Charette and Cam Walker made CFL rosters in their first try. Walker and Finley are currently on their teams’ 6-Game Injured List.
♦ The league’s All Star punter, Rob Maver, received a vote of confidence not just from the Stamps coaches but from his teammates as well. They elected him a team captain according to this stampeders.com article. That has to feel good. I’m sure it’s not everyday you see a punter as a team captain. Congrats Rob!
Maver is entering his sixth season with the Stampeders. He is a three-time division all-star, a two-time CFL all-star and was the Stamps’ nominee for Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2014. The 29-year-old holds the club record for most points by a rookie with 185, which also made him the CFL’s scoring leader that season.

♦ There is a story about Alex Charette in his hometown paper – Charette cracks roster of Montreal Alouettes. The article is worth a read in it’s entirety but here is one of the highlight segments …
The former University of Guelph player wasn’t sure he would make the team.
“I surprised myself but timing is everything too with where you fit in on the roster,” he said. “That definitely played into it, too.”
One person who wasn’t surprised was Alouettes general manger Jim Popp.
“I thought we was the best receiver in the draft and we had very high regards as to his abilities,” he said. “He’s a tough guy with no fear, he has good size to him, he’s very smart and he stepped right in and hasn’t missed a beat.”

Popp feels Charette has a bright future.
“I do think Alex has the ability to be a starter in the CFL and when that happens is a matter of time.”
Away from the football field, Charette will soon be looking for an apartment, The team
♦ In an lengthy interview Monday, Argos’ GM Jim Barker talked about his 2015 draftees [six to eight minute mark]. He has high praise for Cam Walker and Dan MacDonald.
With Walker on the Argos 6-Game Injured List this looks a lot like Jeff Finley’s situation last year, one where we might be wondering for much of the summer if Walker will be back. But Barker’s “He made this team” statement about Cam Walker has me convinced his Gryphon days are over.
Barker also made it clear that LS Dan MacDonald is CFL calibre – “He showed he can long snap at this level” . Barker said the Argos would bring MacDonald back if Jake Reinhart got hurt. He also alluded to the very real possibility that another CFL team could pick up MacDonald.
