Sunday night in St. Catharines this year’s regional Alumni receptions got underway. More than 40 alumni, players, coaches and family members came out to the beautiful home of Peter Partridge & Poppy Gilliam. Most important, the rain held off until the event was winding down. The event was supported by in-kind donations from Wellington Brewery and football alumni Mike Ruff [Pepsi Canada] and George Bortolato [Frito-Lay].
The Niagara Region has been very good to Gryphon Football in the past decade. In fact, according to the Region’s recruiter, John Casasanta, Niagara has sent 52 recruits to Guelph from the 2007 recruiting class to present. A good many of the 2007 to 2011 recruits played for the Niagara Spears and Coach David Howe. It was nice to have Howe and his wife Isabelle on hand. Successful in the real estate business with Royal LePage Niagara, Howe was also a sponsor of the event.
Head Coach Stu Lang spoke to the gathered supporters and introduced the coaches and recruiters who were present. In perhaps the biggest news of the evening, Coach Lang discussed the plans for more renovations to Alumni Stadium. He described the layout and uses of the new space – reception area, coaches offices, meeting rooms, players’ lounge, new dressing room, new training facilities and storage space. Lang brought the architect’s drawing and floor layout blueprints for people to look at.
Of particular interest to alumni should be the two largest meeting rooms that face the field on the 2nd floor. A movable wall allows them to convert into an indoor viewing area with food & beverage serving capabilities. There will also be a roof-top viewing area with barbeque, an idea Lang says he got from Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.
