Won 4 Bluewater Athletic Association titles with the Saugeen Royals. Had an outstanding 2014 season on both sides of the ball. In 7 games he racked up 47 tackles, 17 TFLs, 2 interceptions (one 47-yd pick-6), 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and 3 pass breakups. On offense he had 76 carries for 729 yards (9.6 avg) & 8 TDs. Added 218 yards & 1 TD on returns for 947 All-Purpose yards. Played Rugby at SDSS and has been timed at 4.77 seconds in the 40. Will be playing WILL LB this summer with the Cambridge Lions, his 3rd season of OVFL ball.
One of 5 DB recruits in the 2015 recruiting class for a unit that returns all starters in 2015, but will have one 5th year and four 4th year players. Guelph’s 2015 defensive backfield will be one of the strongest in the OUA and the best Gryphon DB unit since at least 2011.
Cassista looks like a solidly built player with a lot of speed and athleticism. He has played a variety of positions including linebacker, safety, running back, slotback, long snapper and P/K returner. He may need a year to learn the defensive back position and assignments but he has the size and raw tools to be successful at the CIS level. At 215 pounds he could be an athlete who would be able to play closer to the line-of-scrimmage or make big hits from the safety position.
Odds & Ends
- Cassista was a key member of the 2013 SDSS team that outscored opponents 226-0 while going 6-0 in Bluewater Athletic Association play. They lost to eventual CWOSSAA & OFSAA Bowl Champion Brantford Assumption in the regional semi-final.
- Coach Peter Buttenaar’s SDSS Royals won 8 straight BAA titles [2006-2013] and 11 of 12 between 2002 and 2013.
