Guelph has received commitments from two more top prospects in Niagara – brothers Mackenzie and Colton Jones of Lakeshore Catholic in Port Colborne. Mack Jones [6′ 210] is one of the province’s top RB prospects while Colton [6’1″ 190] is a Receiver who played quarterback in his final high school season. Mack is the older of the two and returned to Lakeshore for a victory lap. The brothers always planned to play together in university.
I watched the pair play this past summer with the OVFL’s Niagara Spears. Mack had an injury-shortened season but I caught the game where he wowed a dozen CIS recruiters with a 21-carry, 261-yard, 2-TD performance. At that point I understood why Guelph had been recruiting him for two years. Colton I saw play several more times and he was better each time I saw him as the season progressed. Colton is fast, athletic and versatile which I would imagine was the main reason he was asked to play QB in his senior season at Lakeshore.
Mack Jones is the two-time Niagara Offensive MVP and a two-time AAA/AAAA All Star selection at running back. The Jones brothers will join another former Gator teammate at Guelph as freshman LB/FB Pat Stairs played in the same backfield with the Jones boys in 2013. The Lakeshore football program has been a great source of talent for the Gryphons for the past decade. Other LCSS grads to play at Guelph include Mike Millar, Cory Davidson, Keaton Spratt, Ian Marouf and Kyle Fraser. As always, with Niagara recruits a good deal of the credit for identifying the best players and building the relationships with them and their families goes to Niagara-based coach/recruiter John Casasanta.
