The Homecoming Game is always an important event on the recruiting calendar. Last year Guelph had signed and introduced six players at the game. This week Gryphon coaches received their first new commitment for the Class of 2015. Diego Pineda, a 6’4″ 260-pound defensive lineman out of GW Graham HS in Chilliwack, BC, signed a CIS Letter of Intent at his school on Wednesday.
Pineda was in town for the Queen’s game last weekend. Pineda is a big bodied lineman who already has a lot of the things you can’t teach – height, speed [4.95 sec 40], strength [bench 350 & squat 425]. The 17-year old Pineda is a two-way star for the Graham Grizzlies playing OT and DE. While I haven’t talked to any Gryphon coaches specifically about him, it is pretty obvious to me that he has been recruited to play on the defensive line – the #1 recruiting need this year. DC Kevin MacNeill told CFC that “we see him coming in and competing early in his university career”.
From what I can determine Pineda’s recruitment really exploded this past May when he attended Team BC’s U-18 tryout camp. While Pineda made the cut-down roster, and hopes to be selected to the final team in December, his performance made him a prospect with interest from CIS teams across Canada. Also impressed with Pineda Top Prospects Canada suggested on Twitter that he has a good chance of being named to their All Canadian list this year.
