Lakeshore LB Stairs makes tackle in Junior Metro Bowl

Biographical info: 5’10” 210 – Lakeshore Catholic [Port Colborne ON]

Position: Linebacker – a two-way player for Lakeshore. Recruited as a linebacker. Lakeshore HC Bernie Tessier told me they used Stairs as an H-Back in 2013. Prior to that he had been very good at OG “because of his speed”.

recruit pat stairsAccomplishments: Honoured as a Niagara ‘AAAA’ All Star as both a linebacker and a fullback in 2013 … Named Lakeshore’s Defensive MVP in 2013 … won the OFSAA Golden Horseshoe Bowl with Lakeshore in 2012 … also played lacrosse for the Gators … Stairs played minor football growing up in Fort Erie but didn’t ever suit up for the OVFL Spears …

My Take: I haven’t seen Stairs play or found any of his highlights but I’ve heard him described as “tough”, “a blue collar guy”,  “a guy who plays with a chip on his shoulder” and “a guy with a real mean streak” too many times to doubt it. His head coach told me the other day that Stairs is “100% coachable”, he listens and follows instructions. But, Coach Tessier confirmed, “he has a switch that comes on when he steps on the field”. So while Stairs hasn’t ever made an honour roll or all star list outside the Niagara Region I think Guelph has a gem here. Perhaps he spends a season making life miserable for the dress roster offense before contributing but he’s a quality player from a solid high school program with a history of sending players to Guelph.

FYI – the Lakeshore Catholic Gators [SOSSA] and the Upper Canada College Blues [CISSA] will tangle in an intersectional Friday Night Lights game at Alumni Stadium on September 5. The Guelph Gryphons play their home opener the next day against the UofT Varsity Blues – i.e. Saturday, Sept 6 @1 pm.
