Biographical Data: 6′ 205 – Jacob Hespeler [Cambridge ON] & Cambridge Lions of the OVFL
Position: Quarterback – Roberts is a polished QB who has played in a spread offense at both the high school and OVFL level, giving him 6 or more seasons worth of experience in systems that prepare him well for what Guelph does.
Accomplishments: Two-time Team Ontario QB – 2011 & 2012. Was named team captain and won a bronze medal in 2012 … Quarterbacked the Team O Selects against Team USA in the 2013 International Bowl series … OVFL All Star QB at the Varsity level in 2013 … Roberts led the Golden Horseshoe Current Stars to a victory over the GTA All Stars in 2012 and was named Offensive MVP for his play … Doug Shuh Award winner as the MVP of WCSSAA football in 2013 … 1st team WCSSAA All Star … led Jacob Hespeler Hawks to three straight WCSSAA Tier 1 championship games, finally winning the school’s first title in 2013 … named the team’s Offensive MVP … currently #2 in the OVFL in passing yardage , completing 68% of his passes with 14 TDs to 3 INTs. Roberts has also scored 4 rushing TDs.
My Take: Roberts is an intelligent & experienced QB. I think he’ll pick up what Guelph does very quickly. A month into the season he should at least push the veterans and be an option if injuries were to strike. He appears to be a good decision-maker and I love the fact that he leads the OVFL in “passing 1st-downs produced” and has a big-time pass-to-interception ratio – 65.3:1 and a nice TD-to-INT ratio – 14:3. Roberts addition adds very good depth to a QB group that just lost veteran Luke Nangle, and will enter the 2014 season in 4th & 5th year guys Lindsey & Blewett.
Below are James Roberts’ 2012 high school highlights. Also, here is a highlight tape from 2011 that is a blend of high school, OVFL and Team Ontario footage. A couple things worth noting, Roberts runs more in his HS offense than in the OVFL. He also throws very well on the run.
