Gryphon news & thoughts – Mar 20/14

Gregg Butler, Guelph’s DBs coach the past two seasons, has just been announced as the new Defensive Coordinator of the St Mary’s Huskies. Congratulations Gregg!!

Butler joined the Guelph coaching staff just over two years ago when the previous DB coach, Marcello Simmons, accepted the Special Teams Coordinator position with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos. It is a coincidence that once again Butler replaces Simmons, who after spending 2012 with the Eskies, coordinated the D at St Mary’s in 2013. Just yesterday the Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced that Simmons was a member of their 2014 coaching staff.

While no one is un-replaceable, Coach Butler will be missed. He was a great teacher of technique and played a big role in Guelph’s defensive success the past two seasons. A large group of young DBs the past two seasons will continue to benefit from what he taught them going forward. Butler was one of four coaches on the Guelph staff who won multiple Grey Cups together with the Eskimos in late 1970s and early 1980s.

The CFL Toronto Combine is on today. Gryphon DT Jeff Finley, WR Saxon Lindsey and DB Taylor Palmer are participating. No results are posted yet at CFL.ca. Sportsnet’s Justin Dunk did tweet about some notable highlights:

#Gryphons DL Jeff Finley did 21 reps on the bench and weighed in at 255 pounds at Toronto regional #CFLCombine. #CFLpic.twitter.com/aa412X07N7

#Gryphons REC Saxon Lindsey (@SaxonLindsey_7) #CFLCombine numbers: height 6’1 3/4″, weight 189 lbs, 37.5″ vert, 10′ 6″ broad, 8 bench reps.

Finley’s bench press numbers are impressive for a guy whose strength is primarily his speed and his motor. Lindsey’s 10’6″  broad jump would be the 2nd best at any of the three regional combines. His 37.5″ vertical is also 4th best at the combines so far. All three Gryphon participants today are hoping to catch the eye of CFL scouts & GMs and earn an invite to the National CFL Combine presented by Reebok March 21-23. RB Rob Farquharson received an early invitation to the ultimate CFL combine.

I’ve updated this blog’s upcoming events page several times recently. The two combined practices with York & WLU are something that has some Gryphon fans excited. I certainly plan to attend both and I’ve heard from several football alums who are also planning to be there. Also worth noting I’ve added the link to purchase tickets for the 4th Annual Football Gala Dinner. The link will take you to a uoguelph.ca page rather than the gryphons.ca website of the past.

Speaking of gryphons.ca reminds me that the Department of Athletics will be using new ticketing software this season. I’ve already received inquiries from people looking to purchase 2014 football tickets who haven’t been able to do it. The fact that there are people already wanting to buy their tickets is great news. I will certainly post the info as soon as I find out about it.

Finally, Friends of Gryphon Football has two regional events for Gryphon Football alumni, players and their families planned for May/June. One will be in St. Catharines on Monday, June 2. The other in Burlington on a yet to be determined date. There will be even more such get-togethers in the future with Mississauga, Toronto, Ottawa and Kitchener-Waterloo likely locations.
