OUA announces 2014 schedule

ouaThe Ontario University Athletics office released the 2014 Football schedule yesterday and I have to say I like it. From my point of view it is much more satisfactory than the 2013 version that didn’t have us play Western Ontario and uOttawa, two of the better teams in the conference. I see the 2014 schedule offering 5 or 6 potentially competitive games compared to only 3 in 2013. Mind you, the Gryphons did make a couple of the games with “lesser” opponents more competitive than they should have been.

Some highlights of the schedule from my perspective:

  • First, who could be a more perfect Homecoming opponent than the Queen’s Golden Gaels? I love how that worked out! Only the Western Mustangs would rival the choice of the Gaels in my opinion.
  • Speaking of the Purple Ponies from London, I am very happy to play them in Guelph. While TheScore/Sportsnet360 has always scheduled the final week game of the OUA regular season as TBD, it is hard to imagine that anything other than this contest will be on their national broadcast on Oct 18, 2014.
  • As for road trips, we get two short ones [WLU & Mac] out of the way before classes even start. We do have to travel to Ottawa and Windsor but they are spread out in the final 6 weeks of the season.
  • The two teams in the conference that we don’t face – York and Waterloo. No offense but I really don’t mind not having to watch those games.
  • I am glad to see the repeat of a Friday Night game to start the Thanksgiving weekend. The first night game at Alumni Stadium in decades was a fun experience and quite well attended. Let’s hope that the Dept of Athletics marketing people jump on this opportunity and really make a big event of it. They could take a page from the UofS Huskies “playbook” and turn it into a real spectacle. Reminder: you need to book the afternoon off work to fully enjoy the tailgate party experience on a Friday night game.
