Congratulations to Cam Thorn!!
The fifth year Gryphon lineman was named to the CIS All-Canadian team at the SunLife All-Canadian Banquet in Quebec City last Thursday. Thorn was named to the 2nd team as an offensive guard. For the news release and a complete list of the members of the 2013 All-Canadian team click here.
Thorn received the first all-star honour of his career two weeks earlier when he was named an OUA 1st team All Star. These honours are quite amazing when you consider that Thorn played defensive tackle for the first four years of his CIS career. Thorn’s switch to the offensive side of the ball was really a response to the feedback of CFL scouts and coaches. These CFL people believed that Thorn had pro potential as an offensive lineman. Mind you, OL Coach Mike MacDonald had told me the same thing several times in the past couple years.
In fact, MacDonald was so impressed with Thorn’s physical abilities that he told me Thorn could be an All-Canadian if he played on the offensive side of the ball. Thorn began working with Coach MacDonald on O-line techniques and footwork last winter in preparation for the CFL E-Camp last March. Thorn was impressive enough at E-Camp, in spite of never having played the position, to be drafted by the BC Lions this past May.
Thorn’s CFL try-out was cut short by injury but that made it possible for him to return to Guelph for his final year. The BC Lions retained Thorn’s CFL rights and must be thrilled with what Thorn has accomplished in his first season as an offensive lineman. Because of the increasing depth on the Gryphon roster, Thorn’s shift to the O-line didn’t leave a significant hole on the D-line. Thorn was the Gryphon Rookie of the Year in 2009.
