Two Gryphon freshmen named to All-Rookie List

Congratulations to Johnny Augustine and Orion Edwards on their selection to the OUA’s All-Rookie team. This is the first time the OUA has released such a list of outstanding “rookies”. While the OUA’s press release doesn’t specify what a rookie is, it would seem to me that they are only including what I would call “true freshmen” – i.e. players in their first year out of high school. Otherwise it would be impossible to justify the exclusion of a player like DB Mikey Carney. He was an OUA rookie who started and starred in all 10 games this season after spending 2012 on the practice roster.

From the OUA release: The all-rookie list is designed to identify exceptional freshmen and to give recognition for their outstanding performances. The 2013 OUA all-rookies were selected by the OUA coaches through a nomination and vote process.

Johnny Augustine #28

Johnny Augustine #28

Johnny Augustine started four games and broke the 100-yard mark in two of them. In total, he rushed for 393 yards on 59 carries [6.7 ypc] in the regular season  and added 43 yards on 6 carries [7.2 ypc] in the playoffs. He caught a pass vs Waterloo and scored a touchdown vs UofT. Augustine is a product of Welland’s Notre Dame College School. Read his recruit profile here. You can check out his game-by-game stats when viewing his player profile at gryphons.ca.

Orion Edwards #34

Orion Edwards #34

Orion Edwards dressed and played in every game this season. If I’m not mistaken he started 3 or 4 regular season games at the cornerback position. Edwards also played regularly on several special teams units. He made 15 tackles [10 solo, 5 assists], recorded 5 pass breakups and picked off a pass. One of Edwards’ pass breakups was a highlight reel, bone-jarring hit that separated a Laurier receiver from the ball. Edwards is a product of Newmarket High School. Months ago in his recruit profile I wrote … (excellent footwork), combined with his speed and athleticism, makes me think he stands a chance to surprise some people and fight for early playing time.
