Quick thoughts & links on the UofT game

It was a nice win. The Gryphons’ best effort so far this season. Certainly the offense had its best performance to date. The defense was solid once again. They pitched a shutout as far as I’m concerned. Blame for the UofT field goal on the opening series and the punt return for a touchdown in the final 2 minutes of the game are on the special teams.

Guelph outgained the Varsity Blues 414 to 256, producing 31 first downs while allowing only 15. The Gryphon offense ran 73 plays compared to 52 for Toronto.

Jazz Lindsey receives Pl-o-Game Award from Sportsnet’s Justin Dunk

Just as in last year’s game, Jazz Lindsey was named the Porter Player of the Game by broadcaster Sportsnet 360. His stats line was impressive to say the least … 21 for 34 passing for 297 yards and 4 TDs with zero interceptions. He also ran 3 times for 25 yards. I was particularly happy to see him pull the ball on an option play and run for a 1st down. If your QB doesn’t do that often enough the D will overplay the TB.

And speaking of tailbacks, our freshmen TBs had good games. Bryson Dobush had the best rushing game of his young career – 11 carries for 78 yards plus he scored a 17-yd TD on a shovel pass. Johnny Augustine had 11 carries for 48 yards and a TD. Both tailbacks and Jazz had a fumble but Guelph recovered all three balls. UofT QBs fumbled twice and Guelph recovered both of those. So even though we were playing Toronto in Toronto, Guelph seemed to get all the “Argo bounces”.

The Guelph Mercury – Gryphons roll to victory over Toronto

It’s taken a while, but the Guelph Gryphons’ offence looks like it’s found its way.

After sputtering through most of the first quarter, thanks mainly to a series of penalties including offside on three consecutive plays, the Gryphs ran smoothly through most of the remainder of the game to record a 38-12 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues
