Players of the Week
Offense – Johnny Augustine
Defense – John Rush
Special Teams – A’dre Fraser
Augustine had an outstanding 127-yard effort in his first ever CIS football game. He picked up those yards on 16 carries for an average of 7.9 ypc while sharing the workload with two other freshmen in the absence of Rob Farquharson. Rush picked up where he left off getting in on 10 tackles – 6 solo, 4 assists . The 19-year old linebacker is already entering his third season. He was also named the Gryphon Male Athlete-of-the-Week. Last year’s Rookie-of-the-Year Fraser played sparingly on offense [nursing an injury I believe] but made a large impact on special teams. He had 147 return yards – 12 punt returns for 113 yards and two KO returns for 34 yards. Read the gryphon.ca story here.

For your viewing pleasure, two different highlight videos from Sunday’s 21-7 victory over Laurier. The first is the Guelph package while the second is the Laurier version. Just one further comment, take note of the fact that the WLU version “is brought to you by” a sponsor. Guelph needs to be doing the same. These highlights are watched by hundreds, sometimes thousands and have value. The Gryphon football program needs to start realizing some revenue from that.

Another story on the game at SportsEh.ca – Gryphon ground attack too much to handle for the young Golden Hawks. Two quick quotes:
The Guelph Gryphons opened their 2013 season with an underwhelming, but solid win over the Laurier Golden Hawks 21-7.
Coach Stu Lang and his staff should be very proud of their team, especially their defence, which had 8 new starters but performed like a unit filled with seasoned veterans. They only allowed 8 total first downs all game, had 4 sacks and 1 interception and overall completely dominated …
Guelph had several experienced players who did not participate in the Laurier game, mostly because of injuries. But to my knowledge none of the injuries are serious so our line-up may get stronger in the next week or two.
