Recruit profile: Mark Horta

Mark Horta

Biographical Details:  6’3″ 205lbs – St Marcellinus [Mississauga, ON] & OVFL Mississauga Warriors. Mark’s brother DL Daniel Horta, a transfer from Concordia, is also a member of the incoming recruiting class.

Position:  Receiver – Horta earned most of his honours on defense but his future is more likely on the offensive side of the ball. He has a nice combination of size and speed. He could play several different positions on offense.

Honours:  A versatile athlete Horta is a two-time ROPSSAA champion in the Discus and also excelled in the shotput. On the gridiron Horta won a Defensive MVP award and a Def Lineman of the Year award with the Mississauga Warriors. At St Marcellinus Horta earned a Top Defensive Lineman award and was the school’s Athlete of the Year in 2011. He won ROPSSAA Junior championships in 2009 & 2010. Horta is a three time GTA All Star – a member of the Rising Stars team in 2011 & 2012, then a member of the Current Stars team that defeated the GHR in 2013.

My Take:  Horta is a big-body receiver with good speed who could play multiple positions. Could he play the Z wideout position? Yes. Could he play in the slot? That’s a definite possibility. But he also looks to have the frame to add weight making me think a TE/H-back role is possible for him. I would expect his years of play at DE & LB would have prepared him for the physical and mental challenges of blocking bigger players.
