Team Ontario West starter Eric Denis

Team Ontario West starter Eric Denis

Biographical data:  6’2″ 290 – Notre Dame College School [Welland, ON] & OVFL’s Niagara Spears

Position: OL – Because Denis has almost always been the best OL on his teams he has spent a lot of time playing OT in high school and the OVFL. The Spears are using him at LT this year. But his future in the CIS is most likely as an interior o-lineman. Probably guard.

Honours:  A Niagara AAAA All Star as an O-lineman all four years of his high school career at Notre Dame.  In 2012 Denis made the Golden Horseshoe Region Rising Stars All Star team. He was named a team captain for the Rising Stars and every year of high school. Denis was a starter on Team Ontario West in 2012 and with the Team Ontario Selects squad that played Team USA in Austin, TX this past February. Denis was “widely recruited” throughout Ontario according to Canada Football Chat.

My Take:  Denis is having a great season with the resurgent Niagara Spears Varsity team. He was just named to the OVFL 2013 All Star team.  His Spears squad is now 8-1 and headed to the conference final versus Essex, just as they were back in 2007. That 2007 squad included some great future Gryphons – Jedd Gardner, James Savoie, Sebastian Howard, Juliano Tropea, Michael Fortino and Jordan Duncan. I love that this year’s recruiting class contains not just Denis but his Spears teammate Alan Florez and former Spear Johnny Augustine.

Having watched Denis play just this past weekend in a playoff victory over Mississauga I can’t help but think his play at tackle will make him a better guard. By nature I think his strength is as a smash mouth run-blocker but all his experience at LT will help him with his pass blocking and footwork. I loved the way that he manhandled some good Warrior DLs.
