Leigh Szela #3 carrying the ball

Biographical data:  5’10” 182 – Corpus Christi [Burlington,ON] & OFC’s Burlington Stampeders

Position:  DB – A two-way player at Corpus Christi Szela was a threat [and an All Star] on both sides of the ball. He will compete for a position in the defensive backfield at Guelph. Will study Bio-Medical Science.

Honours:  Szela helped lead the 2012 CC Longhorns to a first place finish in Halton’s tough Tier 1 league and earned a selection as a Tier 1 All Star defensive back. He was selected to the Halton Tier 1 team as a running back in 2011. With the Stampeders Szela was named Offensive MVP in 2009 and was a part of the undefeated, provincial championship team in 2010.

My Take:  Leigh Szela appears to be a well-coached player with good fundamentals. I particularly like his tackling and his quick reactions when the ball is being thrown. Szela will be the first recruit to come to Guelph out of Corpus Christi, a relatively new school but he will be following in the footsteps of numerous other Stampeders. Burlington is one of the country’s top regions for football talent and it really should be a goal to land several top Burlington recruits each year.
