Robin Petrie #33 in OVFL action

Biographical Data:  5’11” 195 – St Benedict’s [Cambridge, ON] and OVFL’s Cambridge Lions

Position:  LB – Guelph announced Petrie as a Sam linebacker – i.e. strong side LB, sometimes known as a coverage LB, one who generally plays on the wide side of the field and often has to cover a slot receiver or RB in pass coverage.

Honours & Stats:  Petrie was Defensive MVP four consecutive years at St Benedict’s and the school’s Athlete of the Year in 2010 & 2012. Petrie was also Def MVP for the Cambridge Lions in 2009 & 2010. Played on the Golden Horseshoe Region’s Rising Stars team in 2011 and the Current Stars team in 2012. Played in the 2011 OVFL All Star game. Always among the stats leaders on his teams Petrie racked up 97 defensive points this summer. He had two INTs and was involved in 10 sacks –  5 solo, 5 asst’d.

My Take:  National recruiting is great but it’s always good to add a top local talent. The Sam LB position will be up for competition with Jarryd Baines graduating. Petrie will be in the mix but I it would be tough for a true freshman to win the starting job in 2013. I’m glad to hear Petrie made it out to a bunch of the offseason SAQ workouts in spite of playing OVFL ball this summer. That will help prepare him to compete in training camp.

Unfortunately, I haven’t found any video highlights to share.
