Recruit profile: Derek Drouillard

Derek Drouillard

Biographical Details: 6’2″ 200lbs – St Thomas Aquinas [London, ON], OVFL’s London Jr Mustangs and Team Ontario West [2012].

Position:  LB – I don’t have any info on which of the LB positions Drouillard is likely to play. My first guess would be the Will. That appears to be the position he played for Team O. He is fast and has good range so SAM wouldn’t be out of the question. He would have to bulk up to play the Mac position but he has the frame for that and has made a good start adding 15lbs. in the past 12 months.

Honours: Drouillard won a high school city championship with the STA Flames in 2012 (and appeared in the finals all four seasons). That came on top of an OVFL championship with the London Jr Mustangs in 2012 and a bronze medal in the Football Canada Cup.

My Take:  STA has been London’s top program over the past five years. It has sent numerous players to the next level. Drouillard and H.S. teammate Jacob Scarfone join a Gryphon roster that already has three STA grads. [In fact, there will likely be nearly twenty London players on the 2013 Gryphon roster.] The past two years Matt Nesbitt, Cam Walker and Colin Mandich have all seen playing time early in their Gryphon careers. I don’t know whether Drouillard will play as quickly given the increasing depth on the roster but he has the size, speed and instincts to be a major contributor down the road. And there are some openings on the depth chart with the departure of LBs Reinhart, Baines, MacDonald and Rukavina. I expect with his having played in a strong program and on championship teams that Drouillard knows how to compete.

It is great to see the continued recruiting success in London. Kevin MacNeill deserves most of the credit for that. MacNeill played his H.S. football in London. Landing Drouillard, who was one of the more highly sought after LB prospects in Ontario, is another feather in his cap.

Below are his highlights from the 2012 Football Canada Cup:
