It sounds like Cam Thorn was able to accomplish most of what he could have wanted to at E-Camp. When compared with the other 10 OL prospects in the combine testing, Thorn was ranked in the top 2 in half of the six events (those that measured speed and agility). He was at or near the median in the other three (the measures of strength and explosiveness).
The performance of the defensive line group in the one-on-ones was the highlight of Day 2. Even the veteran, All-Canadian OLs had their problems. Thorn held his own in comparison. So though he lacked any experience on the offensive line Thorn clearly demonstrated that he had the strength and athleticism to play the position. Add to that, Justin Dunk who covered E-Camp for cfl.ca, has told me that Thorn was considered the #1 long snapper of the combine. It’s not hard to imagine that a CFL team that needs a long snapper and can see Thorn’s potential to be a solid OL in the future would take a chance on drafting him or signing him as a free agent. If he returns to the Gryphons, a stellar year at OT could cement a CFL invite in 2014.

From what I’ve heard the sales of tickets and corporate tables for the Gryphon Football Gala Dinner is running ahead of previous years. That is a good and necessary thing as the event has been moved from the Cutten Club to the larger main ballroom at the Guelph Chelsea Hotel.
This is the primary fundraising event for the Friends of Gryphon Football. It is a classy yet still fun-filled affair. The silent auction items and raffle prizes are incredible. So to will be the number of football celebrities and former Gryphons in attendance. I expect several former coaches and many players from the 1950s thru to recent years there. Hopefully that includes Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff Jr back for a third consecutive year. CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon will be the guest speaker but will be only one of many with CFL connections. Look for Mike O’Shea, the first Gryphon player to have his number “honoured” in Alumni Stadium, to be back and present a second “honoured jersey” to a former Gryphon.
While the event isn’t cheap, nor should it be, they have added a discounted ticket price for couples. I have already bought a pair of tickets and booked a room at the Delta. You can find the link for tickets and info on reserving rooms here. The only thing I’m undecided on is whether to wear the kilt with black tie and jacket or go with the red blazer this year.

As I was standing in the hallways of Alumni Stadium chatting after the Spring Scrimmage, I thought about how much the interior of the football complex has changed in recent years. It is really a subject worth some attention when I have more time. Many things have been done to honour the program and its history all of which add to the character of the place. Below is a video from last year but even it is no longer up-to-date as it was done before the new turf and lighting system were installed.
