Midweek thoughts

It sounds like we should have decent weather on Saturday. Ten degrees and sunny, with the chance of isolated showers. I expect we will see a good turnout of Gryphon fans for a road game. Did you realize that all of Guelph’s Yates Cup victories [1984, 1992, 1996] have come on the road against a higher-ranked opponent? The only Yates loss was at home in 2007. One interesting parallel (there are several others) to 1984 is that in the event of a Guelph win Saturday they will face the Canada West champion at Alumni Stadium. The foe that year was the University of Calgary. The UofC Dinos will almost certainly be the CW rep again this year.

It was nice to see that the game sold out so quickly. Guelph allotment of 1,000 tickets were sold in less than 48 hours in spite of the fact that many Gryphon fans had already purchased their tickets directly from the McMaster box office. Remember to arrive early, wear red and bring as many cowbells as you can carry.

Nice to see that the UofG’s Student Life Office has arranged for bus transportation to allow hundreds of students to attend the game.

From the OUA website, two items you should check out – OUA ANNOUNCES 2012 FOOTBALL ALL-STARS and Mike Hogan’s final column for 2012 – IN THE HUDDLE: Bringjng the stones . Hogan looks at the Queen’s game and the upcoming Yates Cup. I will have more to say about the All-Star selections and the Yates Cup very soon. Congrats to the 8 Gryphon players selected.

another interesting common thread between a past Gryphon Yates cup and this year’s game comes from the 92 win. In 92 we defeated UofT in an overtime (double OT actually) to move on to the Yates cup victory the following week. I’m not normally a superstitious person, but I’m taking it as a good sign for Saturday.
Regardless of what happens on Saturday, I think I can safely say that most of us Gryphon football alumni are very, very proud of this young gryphon team already.
