Early August thoughts

I checked out the field at Alumni Stadium for myself yesterday. It is one thing to see a photo or check it out on webcam, quite another walk on it and see it all first hand. Even without the turf down I was impressed. The track has now been paved and the field appears to be ready for the turf. I can’t wait to see the new turf being rolled out and sewn together. That is something I will definitely be watching for on the webcam

Given the problems experienced by the Ottawa GeeGees  and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, you have to be a little worried about delays to the completion date. But I’m still hearing that that won’t be an issue at Alumni Stadium, at least with respect to the turf and the new video scoreboard. The new Field Turf surface will be ready for play on the Sept 15 home opener versus Waterloo. The lighting system may not be operational on day 1 but we have no night games scheduled this season so that is hardly a major issue.

Just a quick reminder that the Friends of Gryphon Football annual golf tournament goes this Friday. Last I heard it was still possible to register for the event – links for tournament information and to register on-line.  I won’t be playing golf but I will be there for the banquet dinner. Tickets for the dinner-only can be purchased at the same link.

The Gryphons Elite High School Football Camp is also coming up quickly. The camp runs from Aug 13-16 and only costs $40.  High school players can find camp information and register at gryphon.ca. Questions about the camp can be sent to Kevin MacNeill at macneilk@uoguelph.ca.

Speaking of Def. Coordinator Kevin MacNeill, I would like to offer congratulations and best wishes to him and his new wife Monica. They were married yesterday. Monica is a UofG employee and a regular reader of this blog.

I haven’t posted much the past few weeks but you can expect that to change going forward.  As we approach training camp I want to look at lots of issues w.r.t. players – who is returning (Mark Durigon), who won’t be back, the freshmen who will be at training camp, transfers (I think we could see as many as 3 new players), the depth chart, etc..  While my plans for writing about the offense will likely be scaled back the the “grand design” I originally envisioned but you can still expect a couple of posts in the next two weeks. It will be simple stuff to give the average fan a little insight into the offense.  Finally, this blog will be cooperating with the Huskie Outsider blog to provide as much info as possible in the lead up to the exhibition game in Saskatoon, then the fullest coverage possible of the game.

It was a great shock to hear of the passing of 21 year old football player Zack Duguay.  Duguay was a friend of many of the Gryphon players who have come through the Niagara Spears football program. Many parents will also know Zack’s parents Brian and Kelly who have long held coaching and executive positions in the Spears organization. I talked to Zack and his dad at a Spears game just five or six weeks ago. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.  The following video shares Zack’s love of football and his dedication to overcoming health obstacles.
