On a strong team deep in talent, Nathaniel McKenzie played a big role on both sides of the ball. He was a key part of Brampton Notre Dame’s perfect regular season and Peel Tier 1 championship. The Knights’ dream season came to an end in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl semi-final against Niagara Falls’ St Paul. The 6′, 205-pound running back/linebacker will join Notre Dame teammate Elias Mensah at training camp in Guelph. They will become Gryphon teammates with 5 members of that St Paul team they last faced.
I never watched him in person but based on his highlights I like McKenzie’s athleticism. He is fast and physical. As a tackler he looks like what we used to call a Klingon. That was a tackler who, once he got his hands on you, never let go. And while he’s not a fictional Star Trek warrior, McKenzie is a member of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets. I would expect a high level of toughness and discipline from such a young man. On defense he has played primarily as an outside LB. As a running back he lined up in both the fullback and tailback spots. McKenzie also makes a lot of big plays on specials, both blocks and tackles. I am told he is being looked at primarily as a linebacker.
