GHR All Star DB commits

Guelph has landed another outstanding athlete in Brandon Hunter of Burlington Assumption CSS.   A two-way starter for his high school, he played both defensive back and quarterback.  He was named Assumption’s most valuable player and a Halton Tier 1 All Star in 2011.  Hunter also was selected to the 2012 Golden Horseshoe Region team that will play the GTA All Stars on May 6.  He made both those all star teams as a defensive back.

I have watched numerous Halton Tier 1 & 2 games in the past two seasons but never saw Hunter’s Assumption team play.  A Halton source tells me, “he is a great tackler and cover guy”.  I don’t doubt that but based on his highlights I was most impressed just with his all round athleticism, particularly evident in his QB highlights.  He’s fast, elusive and deceptive.  That’s likely what also makes the 6’1″ 182-pound Hunter an outstanding basketball player.  Hunter played four years of senior basketball at Assumption.  That included an All Ontario Catholic championship in Grade 10.  Hunter played minor football in the BMFA and with the Stampeders when he was younger. In recent years Hunter has played rep basketball for the Burlington Sky Hawks.  I learned a long time ago that there is a great deal of similarity between the footwork of a good basketball defender and a good coverage DB.  Defensive back is his projected position at Guelph.
