Guelph has received a commitment from Sarnia TE/DE Martin Popiel of St Christopher’s. At 6’7″ & 230lbs he will bring a whole new dimension to the capabilities of this recruiting class. While he has the size, athleticism and aggressiveness to play on either side of the ball, I expect to see him contributing to the offense. It’s worth noting that Popiel also stars in basketball, vollyball and rugby. He was recruited by several OUA schools as a basketball player. So it’s no surprise that this power forward with soft hands is also an excellent receiver on the gridiron.
It is difficult to slot Popiel into any specific position in the Gryphon offense. Guelph doesn’t use a tight end in the traditional sense. And he does not look like an every-down H-back even though he is an aggressive blocker. But this Lambton high school league MVP would present all kinds of matchup problems for a defense. Popiel’s presence would give OC Galloway the option of adding a package of plays utilizing a tight end in the future. Otherwise the ideal option may be have Popiel work at several of five different receiving positions – H, W, X, Y & Z.
