Whether it was on offense or defense the big man in the middle for the St Paul Patriots was Joshua Janssen. This two-way starter was a key member of the team that won Niagara and SOSSA championships in 2011. The Patriots advanced to the Golden Horseshoe Bowl with a victory over the ROPSSAA champions – Brampton Notre Dame.
Janssen was his team’s Offensive MVP in 2009 (Junior), then Defensive Rookie of the Year on the senior squad in 2010, before sharing the Defensive MVP honours in 2011.
At 6’3″ and 295 pounds Janssen is very powerful, quick and athletic. He has very good speed for a big man and that will allow him to contribute early. Guelph will use this versatile athlete on offense, likely at guard. Janssen was recruited by schools throughout the OUA. One recruiter described Janssen as “a beast who can really move” and “extremely athletic for his size”. He will be joining four St Paul teammates at Guelph – Donnie Egerter, Kory Kemp, Evan Murdza and Ryan Nieuwesteeg.
