Guelph has relied on the Niagara Region for a lot of its recruits in recent years. But I don’t ever remember them bringing in five players from a single team. But such was the talent on this year’s Niagara champions – St Paul Patriots. A key member of that team was Kory Kemp. He lined up at fullback on O and outside linebacker on D.
Kemp made big plays on both sides of the ball in St Paul’s biggest win of the year, a comeback victory over the Peel Region champions. He took a pass reception 62 yards to paydirt in the first minute and sealed the game with a 22 yard pick 6.
The hard hitting Kemp was the Patriots Defensive Player-of-the-Year. A tough nosed kid, I expect his future with the Gryphons will be in the defensive backfield. But if you watch Ryan Nieuwesteeg’s highlights you will see plenty of Kemp’s work [#21] as a lead blocker. Kemp was an offensive threat in his own right. Game reports will tell you he scored plenty of TDs of his own.
