Zack Mallough first announced recruit of 2012

I had heard the rumours for several days. I’d even seen the adjacent photo.  Today CanadaFootballChat confirmed that Zack Mallough is in fact the first announced recruit of the 2012 Gryphon recruiting class.

Mallough was a two-way lineman for London’s Mother Theresa Spartans. The 6’2″ 290lb Mallough missed much of his senior season with a broken hand. But he had already earned his status as a top defensive line prospect prior to this season.

Mallough put in an outstanding performance for Team Ontario West at last summer’s Canada Cup. Mallough also had several highly successful seasons with the OVFL’s London Falcons. In 2010 he was the Defensive Lineman of the Year for the JV Falcons. He won that same award in 2009 to go along with his selection to the OVFL All Star team. Speaking of All Star honours, Mallough has earned a position at DT on the Golden Horseshoe Region team that will face the GTA this spring.

Mallough’s athletic successes have gone beyond the gridiron. In 2009 he won an OFSAA Gold medal in the shotput.  It’s possible that Mallough will also compete for Guelph’s outstanding Track & Field team.
