From Guelph to the NFL and back

Hat tip to gryphons.ca for sharing this link from the NFL Canada blog:

Thomas Dimitroff, a former DB with the University of Guelph Gryphons, is now one of the most successful general managers in the NFL. Awarded The Sporting News Executive of the Year two of the past three years, Dimitroff has been involved in almost every American football league, including the CIS and CFL.

Today Dimitroff directs all aspects of football operations with the Falcons and working with Head Coach Mike Smith has final authority over all personnel decisions related to the signing of free agents, the selection of players in the draft, trades, and related decisions.

Dimitroff’s father, Thomas Dimitroff Sr., coached the Guelph Gryphons from 1979 to 1983, was a longtime scout for the Cleveland Browns and was one of the original members of the Boston Patriots. After graduating from Guelph and leaving the varsity Gryphons behind, Thomas Jr. landed a job in Regina, Sask., where he spent two seasons as national scouting co-ordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.   Read the full story.

While Dimitroff has gone on to achieve success and fame at the highest levels of football he has never forgotten about the Gryphons football program.  In 2010 Dimitroff attended the Friends of Gryphon Football annual Golf Tournament.  In 2011 he was the guest speaker at the first Friends of Gryphon Football Gala Dinner.  Earlier that day Dimitroff also toured the new High Performance Centre in Alumni Stadium and spoke to several dozen Gryphon players who were present.  The following video shows some highlights of the Gala Dinner and his speech.

Given his support for the program it should come as no surprise that Thomas Dimitroff Jr will once again speak at the 2012 edition of the Friends of Gryphon Football Annual Gala.  But this time around Dimitroff will be sharing the microphone.  FoxSports.com senior NFL writer Jay Glazer will also be speaking.  Some people will be familiar with Glazer from his work on Fox’s NFL broadcasts as a sideline reporter. He has been the “NFL insider” on Fox NFL Sunday and an analyst on the NFL Networks’ Thursday Night Football.  Jay Glazer has appeared in several sports-related movies and hosted the TV show Pros vs. Joes.  Glazer also works with MMA and is a business partner of Randy Couture.

The initial FofGF Gala Dinner was a great success raising $40,000 to support the Gryphon football program.  The money was to be used to support Gryphon recruiting efforts and scholarships.  The 2nd annual event hopes to far exceed that success.
