Guelph Gryphon assistant football coach (def line) Brian Cluff has been named the OUA Volunteer Coach of the Year.
As a player Cluff won a Vanier Cup in 1984 with the Gryphons and now as a coach he continues his excellence on the field in a coaching capacity. He has spent 21 seasons coaching the defensive unit for the Gryphons. He has served as the defensive coordinator and also dedicated his time to special teams, defensive backs, and defensive linemen. Despite his full time teaching position, Cluff finds the time to break down game film, attend every practice, chair film meetings, and recruit players. He is also community minded, helping found the Friends of Gryphon Football club, and he organized the donation of used equipment to local high schools.
A former Gryphon D-lineman recently called Cluff, “the best defensive line coach in the OUA, if not the country … he does not tolerate anything but the best”. I was impressed with what I observed of Cluff’s coaching style back in training camp.
