Pretty much everybody knows the situation of the Waterloo Warriors. Returning to OUA play after having their team suspended for a season, the Warriors were walloped by Western 86-22. Waterloo dressed 36 true freshmen in the loss. The London Free Press has a game story if you’re interested.
Waterloo fans emphasize their 2o point, three touchdown second quarter as a positive sign of their potential. From the Waterloo website:
Waterloo quarterback Evan Martin (Kitchener) connected with speedy receiver Dustin Zender (Kitchener) on pass-and-run touchdowns of 35 and 80 yards. Martin completed 23 of 42 passes for 314 yards but was sacked three times. Zender led all receivers with seven catches, good for 188 yards.
The CIS’ preseason preview of the Warriors is here.
This Saturday’s matchup will not just be another regular season game at Waterloo. They are calling it “Black & Gold Day”. And “… the event which is expected to draw large crowds of frosh and community will feature the grand re-opening of Warrior Field after the installation of field turf.” They have gone all out including arranging for sky divers to deliver the game ball. Its not hard to imagine that Waterloo will be a very motivated team.
Hopefully the Gryphons will have plenty of motivation of their own after their disappointing season opener. This game should offer a great opportunity for some young players to get some additional game experience. It should be particularly beneficial for our offence. Now three weeks into learning a new system they should have a chance to execute without facing the pressure that they did against Ottawa.
