Ottawa postgame – part II [with links]

Rob Massey/Guelph Mercury

Players of the Game

Special Forces – Kevin Campbell
Defense – Jordan Thompson
Offense – no one

Scout Team Player of the Week – James Ingram

Thoughts: Kevin Campbell made a big hit on GeeGee punt returner Zach Raynor that separated him from the ball.  Jordan Duncan recovered the fumble giving Guelph excellent field position.  This was a big play that set up our sole touchdown.  Campbell had 3 special forces tackles in total.  Worth at least an honourable mention was Alex Charette’s work as a returner.

I’m not quite certain why the coaches chose freshman Jordan Thompson on D.  I’m not saying he played poorly because he showed a lot of grit for an undersized guy, just that I didn’t see him playing very much until late in the game.  He recorded one solo tackle.  Perhaps there was a message being sent to the veterans.  I would likely have given the honour to one of the leading tacklers – Jake Reinhart (8 solo tackles, 6 assists) or Jordan Duncan (10 solo tackles, 1 assist).

Several receivers had strong games – Dave Honig’s performance stands out in my mind (4 catches for 58 yards) –  but I can understand the coaches foregoing the offensive selection on such a disappointing day.  Jedd Gardner’s breaking of the Gryphon’s all-time receiving yardage record is worth noting.  I hope he adds substantially to that record over the next 7 games.

From Mike Hogan’s column – IN THE HUDDLE – at

I have to admit when Ottawa Head Coach J-P Asselin told me “we’re very confident we can win it all,” I had some doubts based solely upon the number of great players that had graduated. But after watching them in their opener at Guelph I now see what he means …

Hogan essentially shared my sentiment towards the GeeGees.

I should have included this link yesterday.  If you haven’t already seen it, here is the Mercury’s game story – No sparkle in Gryphon’s opener.
