Gryphons looking to soar in 2011
“Hello this is Stu Lang the head coach of the 2011 Yates cup Champions. Please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can.”
A little too confident for a team that finished in the middle of the OUA and was one and done in the playoffs last season? Stuart Lang certainly doesn’t think so.
Lang, who is in his second year as the head coach of the Guelph Gryphons, feels that while last season was a step in the right direction, there is a lot of work left to do if his team hopes to compete for the Yates Cup this year.
“Going into last season everything was new; I was new, we had a new offensive coordinator and a lot of change in coaching staff and leadership,” said Lang. “We are trying to get Guelph out of the middle of the OUA and into the league’s elite.”
After a 3-0 start saw the Gryphons at the top of the league with powerhouse teams such as Western and Ottawa, things didn’t go quite according to script. While the team’s impressive start and Cinderella storyline was put on hold after a 1-4 finish, Lang refers back to the team’s week four game against the Western Mustangs as the turning point for the season.
“I think that the Western game was a watershed,” said Lang. “I really believe that if we beat them that the entire season could have been different.”
